of Letter addressed to Consul General Fox by B & S. 15.6.09.
sir,
"Fatehan" Trouble. As representing the Owners of the S.S."Fatshan" we venture to solicit your good services to bring to the notice of the Portuguese Consul at Canton at present feeling of dissatisfaction that prevails amongst the Chinese at that port with regard to the omission to try, in the Portuguese Court, the Portuguese watchman who is accused by Chinese fellow travellers of having maltreated a Chinese passenger on the "Fatshan" on the 30th November 1908, which assault, it is alleged, caused the death of the unfortunate passenger in question.
The Chinese in Canton are strongly of opinion that the Portuguese Consul has not treated their representations on the subject with that due consideration which the case demands, and they are most insistent that the case should be tried by him and settled on its merits.
Any representation that you can make to the Portuguese Consul will be greatly esteemed by us, for we are, as you can understand, most desirous that no doubt as to the innocence or guilt of the Portuguese watchman should exist in the minds of the Chinese public, who are prepared to accept the decision of the Portuguese Court after a full investigation
has been carried out on strictly legal lines.
Trusting you may be able to persuade the Portuguese
Consul to consider our application.
We have etc,
